Hope in the Smoke and Ash

Photographer Michael Raap presents a photo of hope found at the top of Masaya Volcano, in Nicaragua.

When we find ourselves in a desolate land, look ahead to the hope that approaches.

The cross is the ultimate sacrifice. The cross overcame death.

Up at the top of a volcano stands a cross. Both the mark of death and the mark of new life. Standing above the smoke and ash, it symbolizes hope, of new life for eternity.

For some, the cross is the symbol of the gift of salvation, when Jesus Christ died on the cross and overcame death.

(A poem, by Dayna Slusar)

Above the ashes and smoke of death.

There stands the symbol

of hope and new life.
